Specific limitations of this demonstrator
Data completeness
This demonstrator provides data for 65 weather radars across Australia, sourced from the
NCI data catalogue.
Two full years of data have been processed (back to July 1st, 2023). For earlier dates, please refer to the NCI, which provides a complete archive.
For various reasons, data may be incomplete—15-minute intervals, full days, or entire radar datasets may be missing.
While we have endeavoured to provide warnings to highlight these inconsistencies, care should still be taken.
Please use the radar coverage and extent layers to interpret results. Particularly in relation to the outer extent (edges of radar footprint), misleading zero values (beyond detection) may
be prevalent in these areas and will affect summed totals and visualisation.
Multiple Radar Areas
Important: Where the selected area of interest is covered by multiple radar footprints, a very simplistic calculation is used to determine which data is presented.
This is based solely on the distance from the centre point of the area of interest to the nearest radar.
No consideration is given to the type or quality of the radar, or the availability and completeness of its data.
No merging or accumulation of data from multiple radar areas has been attempted.
Additionally, areas of beam blockage—caused by obstructions, altitude, or proximity to the radar—are presented as-is.
Timezones and Daylight Saving Time Transitions
Daily rainfall totals are presented using common Bureau of Meteorology date terminology. For example, a total of 9.8mm for the 20th May 2025 represents the accumulated rainfall for the previous 24hrs to 9am on the 20th (in the timezone of the radar location). In effect this means that rainfall presented for the 20th will incorporate rain from the previous day: i.e. 19th (from 9am - Midnight).
Where radar coverage crosses multiple timezones, data is shown in the local timezone of the source radar location.
Minor data anomalies may occur in data selections that span a change in Daylight Saving Time.
Area selection and date/time span
The demonstrator has been artificially limited for performance reasons.
For time period selections of less than 5 months, area selection is limited to approximately 20,000 Hectares.
For time period selections of greater than 5 months, area selection is limited to 1,000 Hectares.

Based on the Bureau of Meteorology weather radar network and its derived Rainfields3 data,
this tool visualises historical rainfall information for a selected area and
timespan at 500m resolution.

How to get started:
Navigate to your area of interest
You can navigate to anywhere within the coverage footprint of the currently available radars (shown on the map). Area selection size is limited to 20,000 Hectares, this roughly equates to a 14km x 14km square. Using the scale line shown at the bottom of the map provides a visual indication of these distances relative to the current zoom level.
Select the drawing tool and choose a date range.
Click on the map to define an area of interest. The map will redraw automatically.
Switch to "Query mode" and then click a grid cell to generate a chart of rainfall over time.
Please note: Area selection is limited to 20,000 Ha
Area selection size is limited to 20,000 Hectares, this roughly equates to a 14km x 14km square. Area selection is further restricted to 1000 Ha when the chosen timespan is longer than 5 months.
At the present time, data is available for the last 2 years (back to 1/7/2023)
Data has a 2–3 day lag. Date ranges are adjusted automatically to cater for this.
